Academic Information
Teaching Methods
The courses offered by the Faculty of Economics, Business, Quantitative
Methods, and Social Sciences will typically be lectures which are also
held for regular German students. In some courses, additional classes
may be organized at the discretion of the course instructor.
Courses will be given in the morning and in the afternoon. The
remainder of the day is available for reading and research and preparation of the
following day‘s classes. Courses are rigorous and demanding, therefore
applicants should be prepared to commit at least the same amount of
contact hours each day to private study.
Unless otherwise stated in the course description, students may fulfill
basic evaluation requirements for grades and credits either by taking
final examinations and/or by writing term papers. The outlines for such
papers must be agreed upon with the instructor. An official certificate is
awarded which shows the overall grade achieved. In the event that a participant
is unable to sit the examination, an attendance certificate may be given, if he
or she attended at least 80% of the classes. Please note: course texts will be
available for purchase at the Campus Bookshop or from the instructors themselves.
Levels and Prerequisites
The courses in economics, business administration, quantitative methods,
and social sciences are advanced and suitable for either final-year undergraduate
or graduate students. The courses usually have intermediate courses as prerequisites.
The prerequisites vary from course to course. Each course is therefore described
separately to give appropriate information. Applicants should regard these individual
prerequisites as essential and not simply desirable.
Economics, Business, Quantitative Methods, and Social Sciences (Preliminary) Courses 2012
KiSS offers not so much a set of summer courses as a small-scale degree program.
Its hallmark is the emphasis on the core subjects of economics, business administration,
quantitative methods, and social sciences. KiSS courses can therefore provide a valuable
supplement to a university degree. Each course consists of at least 28 contact hours or 4
hours per week.

Certificates and Transcripts
The Faculty will issue a Certificate of Achievement for the chosen module.
An official transcript of individual records shows the number of hours devoted
to lectures and results of examinations taken.
KiSS is happy to provide confirmation of academic performance in formats
required by overseas institutions, upon written request. Requests placed in
the year of the course taken are free of charge, requests made thereafter will
be subject to a small administrative fee.
Credits
The number of credits transferable for courses taken in Kiel are ultimately
determined by the student‘s home college or university. North Americans
who wish to transfer credits from Kiel, are urged to check with their faculty
adviser or registrar, in order to determine in advance to what extent the
desired courses at the KiSS will fit into their program of study (KiSS is happy
to provide details of the offered courses syllabus/level(s)).
If there are experiences with other European universities, please note that
credits according to the European Community Course Credit Transfer System
(ECTS-credits) may be earned by successful completion of the courses. 6 ECTS-credits
will be awarded for every course of 4 hours per week if the student has regularly
attended it and successfully passed the course exam and/or paper. Under the same
provision students will receive 9 or 12 credits for courses of 6 or 8 hours per week,
respectively. Moreover, 6 credits will be awarded for a seminar paper and its
presentation in class or for an essay written in any other course with the
professor's consent and graded by him/her.
